Summer is here, which means the kids are home and the house is under attack from dirt, spills, and messes. If they are spending time on the furniture watching their favorite movies and catching up on cartoons, then the chances of things getting spilled increases.

Even if you don’t allow your family members to eat or drink on the couch, they will still be sitting on it. If they have been outside, this can mean bringing in dirt and grime and other items, including allergens. These can all take a toll on your upholstery and age it before it’s time.

One of the best ways to ensure the life of your upholstery is to get it cleaned. This will keep it looking and smelling nice. However, in between cleanings, there are some things you can do to extend the life of your furniture.

Dust and Vacuum Often

Removing any dirt, dust, crumbs, or dog hair on a regular basis will help keep your upholstery looking new and extend the life of your furniture. How often this will need to occur will depend on how frequently the furniture is used. If people sit on it every day, then you might want to consider cleaning it every week. If it is only used when guests come over, then once in a while might be beneficial.

Clean Spills Right Away

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s also incredibly easy to get distracted and busy with other tasks. In addition, a child may not always let you know when something happens for fear of getting in trouble. However, if you know about the spill, then getting it taken care of immediately is beneficial. Using a clean white towel to absorb the spill is the best course of action. Rubbing the liquid can cause more issues, so try to avoid doing this.

Add a Stain Protector

Since you may not always be aware of spills, having your upholstery protected with a stain repeller can be beneficial. This will help so that spills bead on the surface rather than being absorbed into the fibers. It will help make clean up easy!

Get Rid of Odors

To get rid of odors on the upholstery, sprinkle it with baking soda. Allow this to sit for an hour, then vacuum it up. This should leave your furniture smelling amazing.

Rotate the Cushions

If possible, you want to rotate the cushions and throw pillows that you have on your furniture. This will ensure that everything is wearing evenly, especially if you find that you sit in the same spot every time you’re on the couch. This is also a good way to see if there have been any spills that you weren’t aware of and attempt to clean them, if they haven’t already stained.

Get a Professional Clean

Having your upholstery cleaned by a professional every so often will ensure that it looks amazing and will last for as long as possible. If there are any stains, they should have some tools that may be able to remove them.
