Purchasing new carpet is a big investment and all the options available to choose from can be mind-boggling. Carpet Material (Fiber Type)

Carpets generally fall into two categories: natural or synthetic fiber. Natural fiber carpets, like wool, are much less common in today’s market, as they are much more expensive to produce and to purchase. Synthetic fibers (those not found in nature) are much more common and tend to be much more affordable. Here are some of the most common synthetic fiber carpets and when they may be the best choice for your space.

1. Nylon. By far the most durable synthetic fiber, nylon is a good choice for homes with children and pets, and in high traffic areas. It will often remain in good condition for a decade or more, especially if professionally cleaned as recommended and treated with stain protectors. For the best quality, look for a 100% brand name statement on the label.
2. Polyester. It’s fairly stain resistant, and feels very soft to the touch, but it is also more difficult to clean and tends to shed more. It’ll do best in low traffic areas like the bedroom, where you can enjoy the softness but don’t need as much durability.
3. Triexta. It’s the newest type of synthetic fiber carpeting available to consumers, and has inherent anti-stain qualities. It seems to have good durability thus far, but since it’s only been on the market a short time, it remains to be seen whether it will be as durable as nylon.
4. Polypropylene. Also known as olefin, it’s pretty good at concealing dirt, and is relatively stain, mildew, and fade resistant. While it’s not as durable as nylon either, it does well in family, lounge, and play areas that are meant to be kept looking clean.
