At Home Carpet Cleaning Tips

The simplest and most important thing you can do to take care of your carpet and extend its life is to vacuum frequently. Vacuuming removes up to 80% of the dirt in your carpet. By vacuuming often you don’t allow the dirt to become embedded in the fibers, which causes permanent damage. Think of your carpet as thousands of tiny cylinder shaped fibers. When these cylinders stay dirty for too long they become damaged. The dirt acts like sandpaper when walked on and scratches the fiber. This is what eventually causes wear patterns in heavy traffic lanes. Although these traffic lanes show great improvement with professional cleaning, they never fully recover due to the abrasion on the fibers. Vacuuming 2-3 times a week can make a big impact on reducing this abrasive action.

In addition to frequent vacuuming we also recommend walk off mats in areas where hard floors transition to carpets. The most frequent place we see this is from the kitchen into a living or dining area. Placing a doormat sized walk off mat mat in these areas allows the mat to receive the majority of the wear that the carpet would otherwise be taking by removing the dirt that is transferred from the hard floor. Most walk off mats can also fit in a standard washing machine, which makes cleaning them easy.
