Allergies? In the Winter?
For some, allergies are the worst part of spring and summer, and they can hardly wait until winter just to have relief from the weepy eyes and constant sneezing.
But sometimes, winter doesn’t provide relief. Have you ever felt like your allergies are worse inside than outside during the winter? You step outside for awhile and you can actually breathe better? If this sounds familiar, it’s likely that you have allergens building up inside your home–especially in your air ducts and in your carpets.
Changing Filters and Cleaning Air Ducts
Oftentimes, dirt and dust are out of sight, out of mind. But all of the dust particles, bacteria, and allergens that are in the air inside your home will also end up in your air ducts. Experts recommend changing your air filters every couple of months–or more regularly if you can see them getting dirty faster. Use the highest efficiency filter recommended by your system’s manufacturer to limit the amount of dirt and dust that can enter the system in the first place.
Some experts recommend getting your air ducts fully cleaned–and cleaned properly–if you or any of your family members are experiencing any unexplained symptoms. (It’s also a good idea to see your doctor about this.) If you see mold growing on visible components, can see dust particles being released into your home from the vents, or have any kinds of insects or vermin living in your air ducts, it is time to have them cleaned.
However, it is very important to have them cleaned by a professional. If done poorly or by someone who is not trained in proper cleaning practices, having your air ducts cleaned can actually cause more problems than it solves by releasing lots of particles into your home.
Cleaning Carpets
Carpets are another big dust trap in your home. While carpets can be helpful in trapping particles of dust and allergens, once become saturated with these particles, they can become more of a source of the problem than a solution. Every time you vacuum, these dust particles are stirred up. Regular vacuuming (at least once a week) can help to mitigate the problem by reducing the amount of contaminants in the carpet. However, some experts recommend professional carpet cleaning once a year to thoroughly clean these particles out of your carpet and improve the indoor air quality of your home.
A professional carpet cleaner will loosen the dirt, grime, and allergens from the fibers of your carpet in a moist environment that is less likely to stir them up into the air, and then completely extract them.
